Miebo What is it?
Miebo is the first and only doctor's Rx FDA-approved topical eye drop for the direct treatment of evaporative dry eye disease (1). During evaporative dry eye disease, the top oily layer of the tears is reduced, causing increased evaporation of the tears; leading to dry eyes.
Miebo contains no water, preservatives, or steroids. It only contains one ingredient, Perfluorohexyloctane (PFHO) (1). This molecule serves to replace the oily top layer of the tears, thereby increasing tear conservation on the eyes and reducing dry eyes.
How often should it be used?
It is recommended to be used four times per day in both eyes. However, since Miebo does not contain any preservatives, it can be used as often as desired when symptomatic without damaging the ocular surface due to preservative exposure(1).
Miebo vs. Saline Eye Drops
Studies have shown that, compared to saline eye drops, Miebo reduces dry eye symptoms by 43% after 57 days of continuous use (1-2). Additionally, when compared to other artificial tear brands, Miebo inhibited the evaporation of tear-like fluid on the eyes by 81% as opposed to other artificial tears ~10% (2).
It has also been shown to remain on the eyes for ~6 hours, whereas other artificial tears containing water have a retention time of about 3-5 minutes (1).
Due to its unique properties of having an index of refraction identical to that of water, Miebo causes less distortion of vision compared to other heavy ointments or gels.
Side Effects
The side effects consist of mild blurred vision, redness of the white part of the eyes, and stinging upon installation of the drops; although these instances were rare (1). Miebo should not be used with contact lenses (wait at least 30 min before reinserting contact lenses).
Conclusion
In conclusion, the new FDA-approved eye drop Miebo is significiantly more effective at treating dry eye than other generic artificial tears. With minimal side effects and noticeable results, it appears as the ideal choice for topical treatment of evaporative-type dry eyes (1-2). Speak to your eye doctor to see if Miebo is a good option for you!
