A "stye" (hordeolum) is a bacteria/pus-filled bump at the eyelid margin that is a result of an infected gland. It typically presents as a warm, tender, painful, swollen, and inflamed bump. Ultimately, it can result in a hardened, scar tissue-surrounded bump (chalazion) if left untreated.

Often, the eye doctor will recommend warm compresses when you first develop a stye. This heats the meibomian glands in hopes of loosening up gland blockage.

It is very important to keep the area clean to avoid secondary infection. It is not recommended to pick or pop a stye as it can cause the bacteria and inflammation to spread. In some cases, antibiotics and/or steroids may be prescribed. Other common treatments include steroid injection and in some cases, incision and drainage are indicated. If injections and incisions are a turn off for you, there are alternate options offered at Le Eye Spa that are very effective.

Say goodbye to stubborn styes with a modern treatment approach using IPL & LLLT

Optilight IPL is an excellent option for treating styes as it targets inflammation and the bacteria causing infection using light therapy. Some patients may like this alternative as it does not involve incisions, medications, or injections. Not every patient is a candidate for this treatment. The doctor will help you decide what is best for your eyes!

Optiplus RF (Radiofrequency) applies heat to the eyelids and increases circulation. When applied to your stye, it will break up blocked oil glands by melting the hardened oil within the stye. This treatment is best when in conjunction with Optilight IPL, however, if you are not a candidate for IPL, RF treatment can be done on its own!

Low level light therapy (LLLT) is a great piggyback treatment for styes as it also reduces inflammation and improves circulation and oxidation of the tissue to promote fast healing.

Prevention of a stye is paramount! Keep up with routine eyelid cleaning and hygiene to prevent new ones from surfacing.
